Texas City incorporated in 1911
The area that became Texas City was founded in 1830s. Texas City’s motto is: “The city that would not die”, having come back from a major explosion in 1947 that demolished the port and much of the city.
The town was originally called Shoal Point. The name was applied to the community when a post office opened in 1878. After the area grew in size, it was renamed Texas City.
Texas City incorporated in 1911 with a mayor and commission form of government. It held its first mayoral election on September 16, choosing William P. Tarpey as mayor.
Texas City, the third-largest city in Galveston County, is a busy deepwater port on Texas’s Gulf Coast, as well as a petroleum-refining and petrochemical-manufacturing center.
